Teeth that are cracked, deteriorated or visibly unhealthy can not only cause dental issues but also negatively affect your self-esteem. Luckily, dental implants can help prevent further damage and boost your confidence with a healthy, beautiful smile.
Designed to function just like your natural teeth, dental implants are still vulnerable to gum disease, infection, and other oral issues. The difference between natural teeth and dental implants is that the part of the implant that lies beneath the gum line is made of titanium instead of a natural root. For this reason, they must be cared for properly.
To make sure you are properly caring for your dental implants, Dr. Oreoluwa Adegun of League City Elite Dentistry highly recommends following these tips:
- Regular Flossing and Brushing – Just as you would with natural teeth, you should brush and floss your dental implants at least twice per day. Be sure to pay special attention to cleaning the back teeth to remove any food debris leftover from your meals.
- Avoid Harsh Treatments – Do not rinse with acidic fluoride washes or use harsh or abrasive dental treatments. The chemicals in these substances could damage the protective materials on the implant.
- Watch Your Coffee and Tea Intake – Daily intake of coffee and tea can stain your teeth just as they would for natural teeth. Remember to brush and floss thoroughly after drinking coffee or tea to prevent staining or discoloration.
- Schedule Regular Dental Cleanings and Checkups – Contact our office to schedule an appointment for teeth cleaning at least twice per year. Depending on your needs, Dr. Adegun may recommend getting an X-ray each year to examine the bone around the implant or more frequent visits.
No matter your reasons for getting dental implants, it is important to treat them as if they are your own natural teeth. Practicing proper oral care and regular checkups will help to make sure your implants last and your smile stays beautiful. For more questions about dental implants, contact our office.
