By now we all understand the importance of brushing our teeth and having an established at-home oral hygiene routine. At League City Elite Dentistry, we recommend brushing at least twice per day or after every meal. But with so many different toothpastes on the market, how do you know which is best for your teeth?
One important thing to note is that no matter what toothpaste you choose, if you are not committed to sticking to a routine and brushing regularly, it won’t work. Brushing your teeth removes all the harmful bacteria and plaque that build up when you eat. Failure to keep up with removing these threats could lead to more serious oral health issues in the future.
Not all toothpastes are created equal
Before you can make an educated decision on which toothpaste to use, you must first understand what most toothpastes are made of. Some of the basic components inside most toothpastes include:
- Fluoride – strengthens tooth enamel to fight off decay
- Abrasives – gently scrub the surface of the tooth without damaging the enamel
- Flavors – sweetening agents that make it taste pleasant
- Humectants – trap water inside the packaging for a smooth substance
- Detergents – create the foaming effect while brushing
Choosing the right toothpaste
Now that you know the key ingredients of most toothpastes, it’s now time to choose the brand that best fits your needs. If you’re a smoker or coffee lover, we recommend choosing a product containing high amounts of fluoride. Smoking and coffee weaken the enamel – fluoride gives it back its strength.
If you have yellow teeth, a brand high in silicates would be best for you. Products that stress whitening will help to bring your teeth from yellow to white over time. If you suffer from multiple cavities, look for a product with cavity-fighting agents. If plaque is your constant enemy, choose a toothpaste formulated to fight tartar buildup. Those with sensitive gums and/or teeth should use a toothpaste made for treating sensitivity.
